Beitrag Statement on the Release of Aung San Suu Kyi Antworten mit Zitat
"I'm not free until the people are free"

"Dear Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,
You bring us the light.
You are the light for us.
We stand behind you.
We stand beside you.
We trust you. We love you.

The struggle for Burma s freedom is far from over. Still, this past weekend we were all able to cry tears of joy. Aung San Suu Kyi is the symbol of hope for a better Burma, and to see her released after more than seven years under house arrest, so confident and triumphant, going straight back to work, gives us all new hope and a glimpse of what is possible for the future of Burma.

However, Aung San Suu Kyi has said: I m not free until the people are free . It is not enough for the regime to simply release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. In releasing her, the regime must guarantee that they will respect and protect her political freedoms and human rights, as well as the freedom and human rights of all people of Burma.

Civil wars are still being fought in Burma, there are more than half a million internally displaced people, more than 2,200 political prisoners behind bars, widespread human rights violations as a systematic part of state policy continue unabated, and millions of Burmese refugees and migrants are living illegally in neighboring countries. They are unable to go home as long as there is no peace or freedom in Burma.

In the lead up to the elections held on 7 November 2010, the regime failed to demonstrate a commitment to respecting the human rights of the people of Burma, and instead continued to crack down on political activity, inflicting violent attacks on pro-democracy activists and ethnic communities. The regime manipulated the elections at all levels of the process, and took measures to further perpetuate and entrench the climate of fear throughout Burma in order to ensure an election victory for the regime-backed party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

We ask the international community to not forget these facts, and to act in accordance. Please support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma in their struggle for true freedom and democracy!
Thank you all for your support,
May you be well and happy
The Best Friend
